What you need to know about weight loss supplements

Nowadays there are many diets and many weight loss supplements out there that claim to burn fat and help lose weight. You have products like Hydroxycut & Hoodia. These diet supplements contain herbs that help with the weight loss.

Let’s take a closer look at what's out there and what they do.

Weight loss supplements help you to lose weight along with your main plan. Whether that is through changing your diet, exercise (things you should be doing when you are trying to lose weight). They come in several forms.

One form is fat burning supplements and fat blockers. They come in pills which contain certain herbal ingredients such as Ephedra, HCA, Chitosan and Pyruvate, which either increase energy, stimulate your metabolism and/or suppress your appetite. However you should be careful when thinking about taking fat burners, some of them are not ideal and are dangerous for you health.

Chitosan is a substance that comes from the external skeletons of marine animals, such as crab that binds to fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), which prevents the body from absorbing them. It impairs absorption of carotenoids which the body converts into vitamin A. Most experts agree that Chitosan simply doesn't work. If any supplement block vitamins which is essential for the body then you should not take them.

Ephedra is a powerful herb grown in Mongolia and China. Ephedrine derived from Ephedra is an amphetamine-like compound which stimulates the nervous system and heart. It's an effective treatment for asthma, allergies, and sinus problems. It is used for weight loss, performance enhancement, energy, or body building. You can find it in products like Ripped Fuel & Muscletech's Hydroxycut.

Since 1994 the FDA has received over 800 reports of adverse effects with products containing Ephedra. Among these are high blood pressure, irregular heart rate, nervousness, insomnia, headaches, heart attacks, seizures, strokes and death. Many of these problems occurred in healthy young & middle aged, adults who used it for weight loss. The problem often occured when ephedrine was mixed with caffeine, a dangerous combination.

Pyruvate is a product of sugar metabolism. It claims to increase fat and weight loss, reduce cholesterol, and improve endurance & can be found in products like Twin Lab's Pyruvate Fuel, Pinnacle Pyruvate 500s. There has been no reports of adverse effects but needs further study.

HCA (Hydroxycitrate) is a natural food substance extracted from the fruit of the Garcina cambogia tree grown in southern India that controls appetite and increases glycogen storage without affecting muscle or energy levels. It can be found in products such as No-Diet Diet, Bio-Max 3000, MicroSlim, and Body Busters. It’s not recommended however. According to a study published in JAMA, HCA is ineffective for weight loss.

Just from the list of weight loss supplements and fat burning supplements mentioned, it’s really important to do research before buying products that claims to burn fat. There are a lot of good products that help you lose weight & there’s nothing wrong taking them, just don’t jeopardize your health in the process.
